Be prepared for earthquakes with these emergency preparedness tips!
Living in California, earthquakes are a reality. Because earthquakes extremely dangerous and can cause serious damage, itâ's important to be prepared. Make sure you know what to do in the event of an earthquake with these emergency preparedness tips.
- Secure large items. While it may seem silly to arrange your home to accommodate for an earthquake, it can help to keep you safe. The force from a quake could throw a refrigerator across a room after all. Make sure to secure large pieces of furniture like your television to the wall or the floor. That way when the shaking starts it wonâ't fall on top of you. Additionally, be sure to keep bookcases and dressers away from your bed.
- Make a plan. From communicating with family members to ensuring everyone is accounted for, be sure to implement an emergency plan. Know what the disaster warning signs, pick a family meeting spot, and know how to communicate with family members should you get separated or need to talk to out of town relative.
- Practice “Drop, Cover, and Hold On!â€. When the shaking starts, be sure to protect yourself by crawling under a sturdy piece of furniture or against a wall away from windows or glass and holding on. Contrary to popular belief, the door post is no stronger than any other part of your home. Make sure to duck and cover once the quake starts.
- Keep an emergency kit at home. It should have non-perishable food, and enough water to last each person for at least three days. Additionally, be sure to keep flashlights with extra batteries on hand as well as a first aid kit.
