Thanksgiving is just a couple of days away, which means it is time to start pulling out your family recipe book and decorating your home. While you are cooking your delicious Thanksgiving dinner this holiday, it is important to make sure that you know how to stay safe. Keep these Thanksgiving safety tips in mind to ensure everyone has a safe and fun holiday.
- Thoroughly clean your oven and stove before you start cooking. Build up grease from past dinners can easily start a fire.
- Stay in the house while you are cooking. If you are cooking something on the stove, make sure that you can keep an eye on the food.
- Keep your kitchen floor free of any obstacles, such as bags and toys. Keep your pets out of the kitchen as well since they can trip you while you are moving around.
- Do not allow children to get within three feet of the oven and stove. Splattering grease or boiling water can easily injure small children.
- Keep any flammable objects, such as towels, potholders, and food packaging away from the stove. Try to avoid loose fitting clothes while you are cooking to prevent them from catching fire.
- Check all of the smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms throughout your home. Replace any alarms that are not working properly or that are outdated.
- Keep a fire extinguisher that is rated for grease fires in your kitchen while you are cooking.
- Before you go to bed at the end of the night, make sure to double-check all of your appliances to ensure that they are turned off.
