Sending your child back to school means a lot more than just making sure they have all the right books and dorm accessories. Making sure that they are covered with the right insurance policies is the best way to ensure that they are safe from any unfortunate situation. Make sure to look into the following insurance policies to protect your teen while they are away at college.
- Homeowners insurance. If your teen is moving into a dorm, your existing homeowners insurance policy should provide the right amount of coverage for all of their belongings. Homeowners insurance policies provide a limited amount of liability for belongings that are kept at a separate residence, such as a dorm. Make sure to contact your insurance agent to ensure that you have the right amount of liability for all that your teen takes with them to college.
- Renter’s insurance. If your child is moving into an off campus apartment or house, make sure to invest in a separate renter’s insurance policy. Even if your child’s roommate has a renter’s insurance policy, make sure that you take out one specific for your child, since the roommate’s policy will probably not provide the right amount of coverage for your child’s belongings.
- Auto insurance. If your child is not taking a car with them to college, make sure that they are still covered under your auto insurance policy to provide protection if they choose to drive the car while they come home for a weekend. If your child is going to school more than 100 miles away, you may qualify for a discount on your auto insurance, since your child is less likely to come home on weekend to drive the car.
