Occasionally, multiple situations could cause the loss of an insured property. It may become necessary to do a little work to determine which policy will pay out the claim.
Determining the Cause of Loss
If there are multiple causes of loss for an item but only one of these causes is actually covered by insurance, it’s likely the claim will be disputed.This could occur if a homeowner’s property was damaged by a fire that occurred during an earthquake and the homeowner was covered against fire but not an earthquake. It would be difficult to determine whether the item could actually be claimed.
If two situations occur at the same time, and one situation is not covered, there may be significant issues as well. This is also true if the situation that is covered occurs after the situation that is not covered. Of course, these issues could be resolved by having insurance coverage that covers both of the events that occur–and this is often the safest route.
