About the Vehicle Code
This latest addition to the California Vehicle Code prohibits drivers from using a cellphone while driving unless it can be used hands-free. The addition to the Vehicle Code seeks to help reduce accidents caused by distracted driving. The 23123.5 addition also outlines that handheld devices must be mounted to the dashboard in a place that doesn’t obstruct views of the road. Additionally, when operating these devices, drivers must be able to use it with a single swipe or tap. The new rules are not exclusive to cell phones; it applies to all “electronic wireless communications devices.”
Vehicle Code 23123.5 & Your Insurance
When it comes to your auto insurance, you often have the option of receiving a good driver discount. When you drive safely and avoid any driving infractions and accidents, you may qualify for a discount on your auto insurance. When it comes to Vehicle Code 23123.5, a violation of the code won’t necessarily count against you as a “chargeable” violation under the good driver law.
