Pothole Damage
While potholes may simply seem like an annoying problem on the road, they can actually cause serious issues. As water drips through cracks in the road, it freezes and expands during the cold weather, causing the pavement to crack, which then causes a pothole. Keep these tips in mind to avoid potholes and keep your car running its best.
- Use the Waze app – before you head out on the road, check with the Waze app. Other drivers are able to report where potholes are, which you can use to decide if you need to change your route to avoid damage to your car. If you find a pothole, you can also report it to the app to keep other drivers safe.
- Slow it down – if you cannot avoid the pothole by swerving out of the way, slow down as much as possible. The slower you are going when you hit the pothole, the less impact it will cause to your wheels, alignment, tires and suspension.
- Give yourself some space – make sure to leave enough space between you and the car in front of you so that you can react if you see them bumping through a pothole up ahead.
- Keep your eyes on the road – if you are looking ahead of your car, you will have a better chance of seeing a pothole, allowing you to make any adjustments to avoid it before it is too late.
- Look for puddles – puddles can be a sign of something more serious underneath. Try to avoid any water on the road since water collects in low spots on the road, which can include potholes.
